Saving the Credit River at Barber Mill
Background
A development proposal in Georgetown's Credit River Floodplain has caught the interest and raised the ire of many local citizens. Upon finding out about the 14 storey condominium, four storey hotel and a large commercial development on less than five acres in a sensitive natural area below top of bank, we began to get involved by organizing and advising the local citizens through a group called Barber Mill Collaborative.
Goals
To prevent the proposed development while supporting a low-impact use for the historic mill remnants.
Progress
As of 2008-07-28 — As of today, we have managed to discourage the developer from proceeding further with his proposal and have motivated the Town of Halton Hills to support a low impact use for the historic mill remnants. A powerful Credit Valley Conservation report citing major problems with building in the floodplain has basically made the development proposal unfeasible.
We continue to be a major force in guiding the BMC to actualize their vision of a low impact use for one or two of the mill buildings while restoring the Credit River Valley. It's a classic case of honouring both the natural and built heritage of Georgetown.
