Improving Peel's Transportation Plan
An appeal of Peel Regional Official Plan 16 to promote better transportation methods, especially mass transit.
Background
ROPA 16 was passed by Peel Regional Council on September 15, 2005. On October 17, 2005 we appealed it.
ROPA 16 outlines Peel's Long Range Transportation Policies. These policies include spending $280 million -- about 60% of the transportation budget -- on road widenings.
We feel that too much emphasis has been put on road widenings, which invite more cars and gridlock. Too little emphasis has been put on rapid mass transit, which would take cars and trucks off the road.
Goals
The amendment of ROPA 16 to refocus spending on mass transportation rather than road widenings.
Progress
As of 2008-06-11 — Ongoing discussions since the appeal was launch have resulted in major modifications to the transportation plan. Infrastructure has been put in place to accomodate rapid mass transit systems.
Further discussions are ongoing to satisfy requirements for the new Metrolinx initiative for state-of-the-art rapid mass transit systems.
