Greenbelting the Credit River Valley at Kraft Mill
Supporting the City of Mississauga in re-zoning the Kraft flour mill lands to greenbelt and residential from industrial
Background
Mississauga has changed the Kraft Flour Mill designation in Streetsville from Heavy Industrial to Greenbelt in the Credit River Valley and to Residential on top lands.
However, Kraft Canada Inc., a huge multi-national corporation, owned by Philip Morris, appealed the City's designation to the Ontario Municipal Board. It wants to retain its present Heavy Industrial designation, giving it the legal right to major expansion without an appeal process.
This expansion is unacceptable to the residents of Streetsville and the City of Mississauga for a number of reasons, including the use of toxic chemicals, the real possibility of a silo explosion, flooding, truck fumes, flour dust, and continuous 24/7 noise. Furthermore, there has been substantial destruction of a sensitive Valley ecosystem.
The City's designation does not force Kraft to move. It can still carry on business successfully until it decides to sell.
Goals
We strongly support the vision of a Credit River Valley restored to its natural state and the top lands transitioned to a safe, pollution free, compatible, residential zoning. To help achieve that goal, we will be a participant in the hearing, represented by an expert planner and supported by other participants from the mill area.
Progress
As of 2008-06-10 — On June 13th, 10am at Mississauga City Hall, 2nd floor, Sierra Club attended a pre-hearing to support the City of Mississauga.
The hearing for Kraft's appeal of the re-zoning begins January 12th, 2009.
