Saving What Little is Left of our Urban Nature
Feb 8th – Our urban nature is made up of natural heritage systems that function as natural cleaners of our air, earth and water. They are nature's lungs, kidneys and form the indispensible habitat for countless flora and fauna. These natural systems also bring enjoyment to people and are pivotal to our wellness.
The last thirty years of short sighted development in Peel's urban areas have taken a terrible toll on our natural areas. Close to 94% of our Natural Heritage Systems have been wiped out in Mississauga. Brampton is heading in the same direction unless something is done and fast.
Sierra Club Peel has drawn a line in the sand and is standing up to any municipality that wants to perpetuate this natural destruction. We are at the forefront of policy changes at the Regional, municipal and provincial levels that will put a halt to the damage.
Presently, we are heavily involved in policy discussions with Peel Region, Brampton and conservation authorities. We now see some real hope in preserving our natural areas. Our elected leaders and municipal staff understand the importance of protecting what little is left of our natural areas. They are now voting and planning for true protection.
Sierra Club Peel is unrelenting in ensuring the protection, enhancement and an increase of our valuable natural areas. Stay tuned for upcoming successes in this regard.
