Sierra Club Peel Strongly Supports Our CAs

Mar 5th – On February 25th, Vice Chair Bill Papoutsis and Chair Peter Orphanos delegated Peel Region stating their strong support for our Conservation Authorities (CA's), and in particular applauded the indispensible work of Credit Valley Conservation and Toronto Region Conservation Authority. Our CA's have been the champions for watershed conservation for more than half a century. If it were not for their relentless defense of our Natural Heritage Systems, we would be in much worse shape than we already are. They have suffered greatly from the deep budget cuts of the mid 90's. Recently, the Region of Peel has stepped up to fill some of the void, however, the Province must do its fair share.

Recently, the development industry has launched a campaign to weaken CA's by eroding their funding and powers. They have asked for a Regional Committee to review CA powers and budget. We have asked to be part of that committee. Our club can assure you that we will stand firm with the people of the Region to stop any attempt to weaken our CA's. Mistakes of the past have taught us that strong natural heritage systems are key to our quality of life, our health and enjoyment.

Stay tuned as we may need your help soon.
